Yukon River Quest experiences floods and new records

Ten records were set at the 2022 Yukon River Quest, with an overall record that Race Director Mia Lee says will be tough to break going forward.
Something Else Entirely, a four-canoe team made up of paddlers from the Yukon and Ontario, crossed the finish line in Dawson City in 39:08:12. This beats the previous record of 39:32:43, set by the Kisseynew team in 2008.
Additional new records were set in women’s tandem canoe, mixed four-person canoe and stand-up paddle board (SUP). Australian SUP racer Lincoln Dews broke the previous SUP record by over four hours. Three-time Australian SUP champion Dews landed in Dawson on Friday afternoon after paddling for 47 hours, 46 minutes and 32 seconds. The previous record, set by Bart de Zwart in 2017, was 52:16:06.
The high, fast water played a part in the faster times this year, but it also created some tough conditions. Several boats tipped over on Lake Laberge because of the headwind. One in seven boats were dropped at Five Finger Rapids, where seasoned riders said the waves were higher than ever. More wind and rainstorms Thursday night and Friday afternoon soaked some crews and slowed others, but a total of sixty-two boats completed the 715-kilometre race from Whitehorse to Dawson. Race marshal Stephen Mooney said the number of runners who dropped out this year was comparable to previous years.
