The News Journal Kayaking for Kids returns on Saturday August 7th – The News Journal
A local water race that has generated thousands of dollars to help local schools and children’s programs over the past few years returns on Saturday.
The fifth annual children’s kayak race will take place on August 7th. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race will begin at 10 a.m.
The registration fee for the race is $ 30.
Amber Owens, an organizer of the event, said on Tuesday that so far around 60 people have pre-registered for the race and have already completed their registration forms.
There are still around 50 sponsor places for the race where the forms have not yet been completed.
This year, there will be no kayak rentals available on race day, Owens noted.
Sheltowee Trace has kayaks available for hire that people can reserve for the Saturday race. To rent a kayak for the race, contact Sheltowee Trace at (606) 526-7238. Kayak rentals typically range from $ 20 to $ 30.
The 2.5-mile race, which features both kayakers and jon boats, begins at the Ballard Ford East River access point, off Ballard Ford East Road, and the finish line is at Redbird bridge. Participants exit the water at the launching ramp adjacent to the garbage door.
Participants should bring their kayaks to Ballard Ford and then park their vehicle at Redbird. A shuttle will be provided between Ballard Ford and Redbird before the race.
At the finish line there will be a homemade BBQ dinner provided by Brandon Prewitt’s BBQ.
In addition, there will be several door prizes and prizes for the first, second and third.
Largely because of the pandemic, run participation was down last year with just around 70 participants. Fundraising remained good last year with over $ 15,000 raised.
For comparison, in 2019 there were over 150 participants and 99 boats participated.
Proceeds from the run benefit Whitley County children’s activities and family resource centers at local elementary schools in Corbin, Williamsburg and Whitley County.
Race sponsors include: Forcht Bank, Whitley County Fiscal Court, Whitley County Tourism, City of Williamsburg, Kentucky Splash Waterpark and Campground, Commonwealth Insurance Advisors, ATS, 911 Billing Services & Consultant Inc., Hometown Bank, Keeneland, Community Trust Bank, James Baker State Farm, and Appalachian Wireless.
