Rod Merritt of East Machias returns from a kayak fishing competition in New Hampshire
EAST MACHIAS, Maine (WABI) – Rod Merritt of East Machias came home with a 19th place finish out of 80 competitors at the Hobie Bass Open Series stop in Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
Merritt saw himself in the middle of the pack after Day 1, but closed with a meaningful comeback on Day 2 in what he described as a “really good finish”.
He explained how he was in shape after his first five catches at the start of day two.
“The big fish were coming in feeding shallow so I fished a bit more in the open sea. I tried faster baits in the shallows. I was picking off those big females as they came back down after s “be fed at night. I hit my limit before 9 a.m., so I got better all day,” Merritt said.
Another bonus for Rod was finishing ahead of Mike Iaconelli on day two, saying it’s “like beating Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR.”
He’s unsure of his next competitive step and is looking to the northeast, midwest and south.
Merritt said he was feeling great after recovering from leukemia and shoulder surgery in the offseason.
