The Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club had a successful weekend (June 10-12) at the 49th International Ted Houk Memorial Regatta in Seattle, and everyone came home with gear.

The club sent 10 athletes and faced competition from the US Pacific Northwest, California and Hawaii.

Kamloops Canoe Kayak Club results:

• Abigail Donaldson: second Open K-1 1000m, first Open K-2 500m, first Open K-4 500m, second Open K-1 500m;

• Tate Solomonson: second Open Men’s C-4 1000m, second Junior C-2 1000m, second Open C-2 1000m, third Open C-1 1000m, first Junior C-1 1000m, second Open C-1 500m, first Junior C -1,500m;

“It was so nice to be back at this regatta after a two-year break for Covid,” said KCKC head coach Stanislav Marek. “It’s one of the best regattas in the country and our athletes have the opportunity to race against national and junior team members. All of our athletes put in strong performances and represented the club and our country very well, while achieving many personal bests.

The Olympic sport of canoeing, also known as flatwater sprint paddling, includes both flatwater kayaking and canoes. Racing canoes and kayaks are extremely narrow and require great skill to balance. Individuals race in one-, two-, and four-person boats and can start competing at age 12.
