Body found after an intensive search near the nautical club | Local News
NEWBURYPORT – Authorities recovered a body from the water near the North End Boat Club on Sunday evening. It is said to be a 33-year-old man who went missing on Saturday night.
Newburyport Police, US Coast Guard and Massachusetts State Police searched the yacht club grounds on Saturday night and sent divers into the water near the docks on Sunday morning to search for Kevin Mahoney of Newbury , who was reported missing by his girlfriend.
After extensive search and rescue efforts on Sunday, authorities found a body believed to be Mahoney’s at around 5:20 p.m.
Mahoney, of 19 20th St., would have turned 34 this week. He was last seen on the boat club docks around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, but was not reported missing until 7:27 p.m. Saturday. Mahoney’s car, boat, medications and personal effects were at the yacht club, according to the police register.
City Marshal Mark Murray said Sunday morning that Mahoney was last seen by witnesses early on Saturday.
Mahoney’s girlfriend, a woman from Newburyport, reported him missing about 18 hours later, when Newburyport police began to search the yacht club grounds and docks off Merrimac Street.
Murray said the Coast Guard was also notified, but decided that a search in the water was not possible until dawn Sunday, when a USCG helicopter and a 47-foot rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Merrimack River joined the effort at 6:30 am.
Murray said divers from the Newburyport Police Department and State Police were searching around the docks.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police, the Newburyport Fire Department and the Newburyport Harbor Master were also part of the search and rescue efforts.
“This is where he was last seen,” Murray said. “We were told he was on the dock and was intoxicated.”
Murray said that late Friday or early Saturday Mahoney was with his girlfriend and left on his own.
“We don’t know what the reason was,” Murray said. “There was kind of a showdown between the two and they broke up.
“We have a witness who said he came down to the wharf. He was intoxicated, we were told. Lots of things are happening on the docks, ”said Murray.
Murray and harbor master Paul Hogg, who were also at the boat club during the search on Sunday, said divers had been in the water looking but had to be pulled out to wait for low tide, which was around 1pm. time. At least two divers took turns looking. under the quays, a maze of mooring chains.
“With the clarity of the water and the current, and there are a lot of chains under the docks, it is very dangerous” for the divers, said the marshal.
After the body was found on Sunday evening, Murray thanked everyone involved in the search effort.
“At this time, I would like to send my condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Mr. Mahoney,” he said.
The investigation is continuing and is being conducted by the Newburyport Police Department and State Police assigned to the Essex District Attorney’s Office. The state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
